Special Convocation, on 29 Dec 2012

Vels University hosted a Special Convocation on 29.12.2012 at the Vels University Campus to honour those personalities who have excelled in their respective fields ,such as public life, Journalism, Science, Arts, Fine Arts, Sports or Social Services

This Special Convocation saw the conferring of Honoris Causa on none other than Dr. A. Sivathanu Pillai, Distinguished Scientist & Chief Controller(R&D), DRDO, Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India  and Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, BrahMos Aerospace, New Delhi and Shri. Sourav Chandidas Ganguly, Former Captain of the Indian Cricket Team. 

Dr. Pillai joined Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO) in 1986.  Dr. Pillai, introduced innovative management systems and played a key role in the development of Agni, Prithvi, Nag & Akash Missiles.  Dr. Pillai is regarded as the Father of BRAHMOS, the most advanced Supersonic Cruise Missile.  Dr.Pillaihas published many papers in the international and national journals and has authored several books.

Sourav become the Captain of the Indian Cricket Team in 2000.  He led the Indian Team to victory in South Africa.  By 2004, he had achieved significant success as captain and was deemed as India’s most successful  cricket captain by sections of the media.   Ganguly opened a new leaf in Indian Cricket history by insisting on the importance of a foreign coach for the Indian Cricket team.  Ganguly’s aggressive style and importance on fitness ushered in the development  of a better cricket Team for India.

Shri. T.S.Krishna Murthy, Former Chief Election Commissioner of India was the Chief guest on the occasion and delivered the felicitation address and presented the Honoris causa Degrees.
