Career Education program, an initiative by IBM, is designed to develop the critical skills and nurture basic competencies in Higher Education that are needed in this dynamic industry. The Career Education Program has launched specialized courses to develop sufficient industry needed skills for manpower on emerging areas of technology such as Cloud, Mobility, Big Data, Business Analytics and Cyber security.
VELS University and IBM have decided to collaborate in building the critical mass in the areas of Cloud, Mobility, Big Data & Business Analytics. As a part of the endeavor VELS University has set up an IBM Business Analytics Lab & IBM Cloud Computing Lab in the campus to help students build their skill set. The platform brings together the latest software content, real-world industry experience, hands-on lab courses and best practices, all into a single unique education program, to prepare students to be readily acceptable by the organizations.

Vels university faculty would handle the core subjects; IBM would train the train the faculty members of Vels University in handling few of the static subjects. The remaining industry relevant subjects would be handled by experts from IBM.

Right set of skills that IT industry needs and better prospects of working with the leading organizations in this industry on cutting edge technology and projects. The curriculum of the courses has been designed jointly by university and IBM based on the industry requirements. Students who have gone through such specializations will tend to fast track their technology based learning and induction when they join various organizations. Work on the cutting edge tools and technologies from IBM that are used by most of the organizations including Fortune 500 and IT services companies. Students may also have the opportunity to visit IBM offices/centres from time-to-time for live industry experience. How is the curriculum designed for these programs?
The curriculum of these programs has been jointly developed with IBM on various industry specializations, based on the skills requirements of various organizations across the world including Banks, Computer Services, Education, Healthcare, Insurance, Manufacturing, Retail and other industries. The curriculum has an innovative mix of subjects of core computer science engineering, enterprise software and specialization areas. The mix addresses that students are well versed with core computer science engineering and other foundational skills and can clearly articulate their career goals and the purpose of pursuing the program. To keep the curriculum abreast as per the industry needs, a joint coordination committee has been setup with members from the university and IBM that frequently reviews and makes recommendation to the Board of studies regularly. For specialization subjects, the courseware is provided directly by IBM.
What are the additional facilities from University for this course?
The university has setup an IBM Software Lab for Emerging Technologies where students and faculty members will have access to all the relevant IBM Software for courses. IBM through its academic initiative program will provide current software for education purposes including IBM Rational, IBM DB2, IBM Cognos, IBM Worklight, IBM Infosphere and more. In this Lab, IBM experts will be actively involved to teach students face to face to ensure that the knowledge and skills are imparted effectively. Students will also gain experiential learning in this lab with various live project challenges given by experts from IBM and university faculty members.
What can be the future prospects?
Strong focus on the right set of foundation and specialized skills in the courses ensures that students are rightly mapped to the high industry demands in these areas. The potential recruiters including large IT players like Infosys, TCS, HCL Technologies, Cognizant, IBM, Dell, Wipro, Accenture etc. need the skills and manpower in these specialized areas and present good offers. Various analysts (Gartner, IDC, Forrester etc.) and industry bodies like NASSCOM have repeatedly highlighted the gap and manpower shortage in the areas of Cloud, Analytics, mobility etc. Their studies indicate that in next few years the requirement of skilled manpower in these areas is going to increase whereas the supply may fall short. This indicates that ones that are skilled in such technology growth areas would be much sought out and may be demand premium.
How is the degree/certificate issued for these programs?
While the degree is issued by the university, the students also receive a certificate of completion jointly from IBM and the university highlighting the course and specialization as per the program requirements.
